It Was Best to Be So

I’m think­ing of the days gone by

And many scenes re­call

Which to me then seemed hard to bear

But God was in them all.

I know the tri­als which have come

Tho’ then not un­der­stood

Have to me many bless­ings brought

And worked out for my good.

God sees along our rug­ged way

And knows what is the best

Altho’ some­times the path seems rough

This tho’t shall be my rest.

Thou canst see my ev­ery step

My times are in Thy hand;

I know Thou do­est all things well

Tho’ hard to un­der­stand.

The star of hope the wise men led

Where their Re­deem­er lay;

So God still leads us by His love

And guides us all the way.

They safe­ly thro’ the Red Sea passed

His chos­en Is­ra­el band;

So now His love is oft re­vealed

I oft can feel His hand.

His cloud of glo­ry led by day

His cloud of fire by night;

The tri­als that seemed hard and wrong

I now can see were right.

Then help me

Lord

to ev­er know

All things for good shall be

If I while here Thy way do keep

And trust my all to Thee.
